In een artikel op gamesindustry.biz is een interview te lezen met ex FBI-profiler Mary Ellen O’Toole. Fijn dat ze een vrouw is, maar we zijn vooral blij dat ze ook nog eens positief is wat betreft video games en geweld.
Onlangs werd bekend gemaakt dat de politie een onderzoek is gestart naar de link (eventueel motief) tussen video games en de Sandy Hook schietpartij. Belachelijk natuurlijk, en daar is Mary Ellen O’Toole het mee eens. Ze geeft toe dat games vaak meegenomen worden in politieonderzoek naar gewelddadige individuen, maar dat het niet de hoofdoorzaak is voor geweld.


Uitspraken van O’Toole in de CBS panel discussie:

“It’s my experience that video games do not cause violence. However, it is one of the risk variables when we do a threat assessment for the risk to act out violently.It’s important that I point out that as a threat assessment and as a former FBI profiler, we don’t see these as the cause of violence, we see them as sources of fuelling ideation that’s already there.”

Texas A&M Universiteit professor Christopher Ferguson voegde eraan toe dat geweld onder jongeren zelfs afneemt, games, films en muziek zijn juist uitlaatkleppen. Ferguson:

“I think we have to put this discussion, to some extent, in historical perspective. And when new media come out that they tend to go through a period of what we call moral panic, in which they are blamed for all manner of societal ills. And probably the best example of this was from the 1950s, when we had Congress and psychiatrists who were claiming that comic books were responsible for not only juvenile delinquency, but homosexuality.”

Natuurlijk is nu bekend dat je van stripboeken niet homoseksueel of een jeugdcrimineel wordt, maar in de jaren 50 was dit dus nog heel anders. Misschien heeft de maatschappij dus meer tijd nodig om games niet langer als zondebok te zien.

“We’re in a mode of worry about – or panicking about this type of media. We may do some putting the cart before the horse, and we may see some people sort of starting with a conclusion and trying to assemble data in a very selective way to try to support that conclusion.”

Wat worden we hieruit wijzer? Niks eigenlijk, want wij gamers roepen dit al jaren. Maar het is toch fijn om eens mensen met wat meer invloed positief te horen discussiëren over video games.
